The Detroit Red Wings will head into Western Canada to take on the Winnipeg Jets in tonight's matchup. These teams have played just one other time this season back in December when the Jets shut out the Wings 3-0 in Detroit. Both of these teams have had a disappointing season so far, but there are bright spots in every team looking forward. With that, it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Red Wings-Jets prediction and pick.

Why The Red Wings Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Detroit Red Wings have had a rollercoaster of a season so far, starting out hot, but more recently they have been struggling pretty hard. They are one of the worst teams when it comes to generating offense as they only score 2.81 goals per game and their defense is even worse, allowing 3.86 goals against per game. The Wings are still a very young team who are in the middle of a rebuild. I still think they have another couple of years or so before they really get to be a contending playoff team again. Starting goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic started against Boston last night, so we should be seeing backup Thomas Greiss get the starting nod tonight. He's averaging a .886 save percentage while allowing 3.76 goals against per game. He'll look to shut the door on the Jets tonight.

Why The Jets Can Cover The Spread/Win

On paper, the Winnipeg Jets are one of the better teams in the league. They have the talent up front to really win most of their games, but the chemistry throughout the team just doesn't seem to be there lately. The Jets are only scoring 3.07 goals per game but are also breaking even, holding other teams to just 3.07 goals per game. Most of that success can be credited to starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who I can assume will get another start tonight. He's averaging a save percentage of .912 while allowing 2.92 goals against per game.

The Jets should genuinely be a playoff team, they definitely have the talent, but with a few recent losses, the Jets are now down by six points for a playoff spot, and it's not looking very likely at this point. Maybe this is the game for them to turn things around and run the table for the rest of the season.

Final Red Wings-Jets Prediction & Pick

This is one of those games where both teams understand that they're likely both out of the playoffs, so go out there, have fun, and just play for pride at this point. With that said, I think the Jets simply get the job done at home against a tired Red Wings team. However, the odds for the Jets to win are not exactly in our favor, so I'm going to just take the over. Both defenses are struggling lately, to say the least, and I think it can very easily turn into a high-scoring game. For value purposes, give me the over n this one.

Final Red Wings-Jets Prediction and Pick: Over 6.5 (-110)
