Why The Wild Can Cover The Spread/Win

Article Continues Below

The Minnesota Wild are looking to avoid their fifth straight loss tonight as they are in the midst of their worst stretch of the season. It seemed like they were a guarantee to make the playoffs, but with this bad stretch, it's no longer looking like such a sure thing. The Wild have been one of the strongest offensive teams all season as they currently rank fourth, scoring 3.67 goals per game. Granted, their last two games were against the red-hot Calgary Flames, and the Flyers are considerably a much weaker opponent.

Their goaltending has been strong all year but still couldn't slow down the Flames. We can assume we'll see Cam Talbot between the pipes tonight as he has a .908 save percentage and allowing 2.98 goals against on the year so far. He's slowed down significantly since his All-Star appearance earlier in February, but he should look to have a bounce-back game tonight against a struggling Flyers team.

Why The Flyers Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Philidelphia Flyers have been a laughing stock of a hockey team this year as they are in last place in their division with a 16-27-10 record (42 points). They have lost four of their last five games and have only scored nine goals within that span. Their offensive production currently ranks 29th in the league, only scoring 2.47 goals per game. Claude Giroux and Cam Atkinson had led the way for the Flyers this year, but both of them are also being involved in trade rumors as the deadline is slowly approaching (March 21st).

Goaltender Carter Hart has had his ups and downs, but he'll look to get the start tonight as his play is actually much better than his 10-17-6 record on the season. Hart has a .912 save percentage while allowing 2.87 goals per game but just doesn't have the offensive help in front of him that the Flyers really need. Can they pull off the home upset here tonight?

Final Wild-Flyers Prediction & Pick

Despite the Wild losing four in a row, they are simply the much better team in this matchup. Minnesota has been a solid team on the road, posting a record of 15-12-2 while the Flyers have been very poor at home as they are just 9-14-5. This is the opportunity that the Wild have been waiting for, to get back in the win column and start some real momentum. Because they're overall the better team, it doesn't shock me that their line is almost -200, so I'm going to take the classic “win in regulation” trick as the odds are much better.
