Why The Kings Can Cover The Spread/Win
Article Continues BelowThe Las Angeles Kings were heavy underdogs heading into this series where everyone thought the Oilers had a good chance at making a deep run in the playoffs. After winning game one, the Kings will look to take a surprising 2-0 lead in the series before taking it back to home ice. The main problem for the Kings in that game was their powerplay, not being able to capitalize on any of the four opportunities but also gave up two goals out of the four penalties that the Kings took themselves. Goaltender Jonathan Quick finished the game with 36 saves and three goals allowed, putting his total save percentage at .923%. He'll look to get another start for game two tonight as he needs to keep his team alive if they have any shot at making a deep run in the playoffs.
Why The Oilers Can Cover The Spread/Win
The Edmonton Oilers played a very hard-fought game but just couldn't get the job done. Despite outshooting the Kings, they couldn't find the back of the net. However, they did capitalize on two of their powerplay opportunities and killed all four of their own penalties. Unfortunately, goaltender Mike Smith is going to be the one who made the wrong play and the wrong time, giving up the lead in the third period after a bad giveaway. At the time of this writing, it's unclear who will get the start for game 2, whether it'll be Mike Smith or Mikko Koskinen, but either decision is not a very good one as goaltending for the Oilers has been brutal all season long. We'll see if they can rely on their offense to win game two tonight.
Final Kings-Oilers Prediction & Pick
The Kings looked very undisciplined in game one, whether the calls were justified or not. Of course, they'd like to stay out of the box more, but they played with enough poise to remain on track and capitalize on the opportunities that were given to them. The biggest issue for the Oilers is their goaltending. A lot of speculation has been around the goaltending coming into the playoffs, and it certainly showed in game one. The Oilers are very much the type of team that argues “the best defense is a better offense.” In some cases, yes, but in the NHL playoffs, no. Teams NEED goaltending in the playoffs or they simply won't win any games; game one being a prime example.
With that said, I think the Oilers will bounce back and get a win to tie the series before heading into LA. Because the value just isn't there, I'm going to take the over in this game. Six and a hook is a little high for my liking, but I'm liking the way these teams are creating offensive opportunities and I think it can easily be done again tonight.
Final Kings-Oilers Prediction and Pick: Over 6.5 (-104)
