Why The Oilers Can Cover The Spread/Win

Article Continues Below

The Edmonton Oilers started off the season red hot, but slowly took a turn for the worst as they fired there head coach and hired Ray Woodcroft. Since then, the Oilers have been on a tear once again and back to looking like true contenders. This team is littered with talent, but their biggest problem is their defense, which has looked vulnerable at times, to say the least. One of their biggest issues is goaltending, although starter Mike Smith has been playing pretty well recently. It's likely that we'll see him in net once again tonight as he has a .935 save percentage so far in the postseason. The Oilers have now won two games in a row, taking the lead in the series, and would love to get a win here so they can finish off the Kings on home ice for game five.

Why The Kings Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Kings had an under-the-radar type of regular season, just barely sneaking into the playoffs as the three seed in the Pacific division. However, through the first three games of this series, the Kings have been outscored 18-5. They pulled off the upset in game one, thanks to a lousy play by Mike Smith, but gave up games two and three. In order to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Kings have found themselves in a must-win scenario, forcing them to even up the series before heading back to Edmonton for game five. Even though they've allowed 18 goals so far in the postseason, goaltender Jonathan Quick has been incredible and singlehandedly keeping the Kings alive. He'll likely get another start tonight as desperate times call for desperate measures.

Final Oilers-Kings Prediction & Pick

The issue with this pick is that I think the Kings are going to put up a very good fight. However, they've looked very sluggish lately and can't seem to find the back of the net against one of the worst goaltending pairings in the playoffs this season. I think it's a pretty easy pick in my opinion, but we're going to be looking for value. With that said, give me the Oilers on the puck line.

Normally I'd just pick the Oilers to win here (in fact, a 3Way Moneyline bet in favor of the Oilers is listed at +105), but we want to make some money, so they better get an empty-net goal near the end of the game to put them up by at least two goals. I think they can certainly go up 3-1 and finish off the Kings at home in game five. To do that, the Oilers need to win this game first.

Final Oilers-Kings Prediction and Pick: Oilers -1.5 (+155)
