Why Southampton Could Win This Match
Southampton was the darling of the English Premier League for a while. Since arriving from the Championship in 2012, the Saints managed four top-half finishes, including two Europa League spots they took at the end of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. After that, however, Southampton has not finished above the 11th spot. This season will not be any different, as they occupy the 15th spot with two games to go, and the maximum they can get, if all results go in their favor, is the 10th spot. Still, they are a very tough team to play against, especially at St Mary's Stadium.
The biggest reason why Southampton could win this match is James Ward-Prowse. The former Soton youth product has had his best season, goalscoring-wise, and he gets most of his goals by the way of free kicks. The issue of Southampton this season is that they did not get anyone to really follow Ward-Prowse in any sort of way, as losing Danny Ings in the offseason really hurt their attacking third. Still, if there is an opportunity for a free kick in the area, or if Ward-Prowse is given space to cross, he will take it.
Additionally, the reason why Southampton could be winning this game is that they are virtually playing for nothing. That relaxed state of mind coming into the game could see them attack Liverpool from the get-go. If they manage to score an early goal, there should be a chance for the Saints to win this match.
Why Liverpool Could Win This Match
Liverpool got two titles this season, but there is still a chance to go for even more. The Reds are still within a chance to win the title in England, but they need Manchester City to slip up in the last two games to win it. Additionally, on the 28th of May, they will be playing Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Due to the dream of the quadruple, however distant the chance for the EPL title looks now, they simply need to win this game. Given their overwhelming talent, they are huge favorites.
It is not only their talent in terms of singular individuals but also Liverpool's ability to field at least two strong lineups from their roster. Small knocks to Mohamed Salah and Fabinho are somewhat concerning and Jurgen Klopp might seek to rest them for the last two games, but the Liverpool roster is too deep for that to be an issue versus Southampton, with all due respect. Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Roberto Firmino are all players that are ready to go right away and should be featured in this match.
Last, but not least, Liverpool could win this match because of their mentality, especially in the context of the Champions League final coming up soon. To make sure they are in match form for the final, Klopp will likely field his best possible eleven and possibly slightly rotate. He will ensure that the players are motivated and versus a bottom-half side like Southampton, it should be enough for a win.
