If you were waiting with bated breath for Brett Favre's reaction to the conviction of Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd, congratulations, the former NFL MVP has finally weighed in.

Just a week after publicly wishing that athletes would avoid politics, Favre decided the world needed to hear his viewpoint on a political subject, discussing the Floyd case on his podcast “Bolling with Favre.”

Transcript via TMZ Sports:

“I find it hard to believe — and I'm not defending Derek Chauvin in any way — I find it hard to believe, first of all, that he intentionally meant to kill George Floyd,” Favre said.

“That being said, his actions were uncalled for. I don't care what color the person is on the street. You do not … I don't know what led to that video that we saw where his knee is on his neck, but the man had thrown in the towel. It was just uncalled for.”

While Favre may have misgivings about the verdict due to his belief that Chauvin had no intention of murdering Geroge Floyd, it's important to note that the former Minneapolis police officer was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, which does not require prosecutors to prove intent.

Therefore, even if Favre is correct that the officer did not intend to commit murder, that would have no bearing on the outcome of the case, as it was not a factor jurors were asked to consider in their deliberations. Favre's comments on the Floyd case are also not unusual for the former Green Bay quarterback.

Despite his previous remarks stating that athletes should avoid the political sphere, Favre publicly endorsed former president Donal Trump in the November 2020 election and was a “special guest” at a Trump rally in Wisconsin. It doesn't appear that Favre's issue is mixing sports with politics, as much as it is mixing politics that he disagrees with, with sports.
