Elway’s proclamation confirms the recent rumors that they are indeed open to shopping the pick in order to acquire more picks later in the draft.
The Broncos have long been linked with selecting one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft class with that No. 5 pick to be their long-term answer at the position. However, Elway’s announcement that he’s openly shopping the pick indicates that their drafting a QB is hardly set in stone and that they’re open to different possibilities with that pick.
While a quarterback could still be in the picture on draft day, they will likely look to trade down if their quarterback of choice is no longer on the board at No. 5. For what it’s worth, the Broncos have been strongly linked with Baker Mayfield, who is reportedly going to the New York Jets at No. 3.
Denver has recently been linked with Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward as a potential non-QB option. Ward would make an ideal replacement for Aqib Talib, who was traded to the Los Angeles Rams earlier this offseason.
With the number of teams possibly looking to trade up and take a top quarterback – the Cardinals, the Dolphins, the Bills, maybe even the Patriots – the Broncos could have a handful of potential suitors bidding for that No. 5 pick. The Broncos could then focus on adding more depth at other positions as they look to return to playoff contention in the AFC.
