Despite openly putting the No. 5 overall pick up for sale, the Denver Broncos eventually ended up keeping the pick and used it to draft defensive end Bradley Chubb. But the draft could have been so different for the Broncos, who apparently had a deal for No. 5 in place.

According to Mike Klis of 9News, the Broncos were all set to send the pick to the Buffalo Bills for two first-rounders and a third-rounder if Chubb – who Denver considered to be the co-best player in the entire draft – was no longer on the board.

Had the Browns with their No. 4 pick selected Chubb, the Broncos would have taken the Bills’ trade package. According to sources, the Broncos would have acquired the Bills’ No. 12 and No. 22 picks in the first round and one of their two second-round picks (either No. 53 or No. 56 overall) while Denver would have sent one of its third-round picks (No. 71 or no. 99) back to Buffalo.

It speaks to just how highly the Broncos rated Chubb that they decided to pass up on such an impressive haul in order to keep the pick and get him. They could have used those additional picks to fill a couple more needs on their roster. But they believed that Chubb’s impact would still be greater than what those players would’ve provided.

In the end, though, the Bills eventually found a way to trade up and get their potential franchise quarterback in Josh Allen a couple picks later at No. 7. The Broncos also got the player they wanted and have now formed potentially one of the best pass rush combinations in the entire league.

So while their proposed deal didn’t end up going down, both teams should still come away happy with how things turned out.
