Last Thursday, the Cleveland Browns were out of contention for quarterback Deshaun Watson…or so we thought. Word around the league was that Watson was deciding between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons as his next place of employment. However, the dark horse prevailed, and Watson joined the Browns, leaving NFL fans stunned.

Apparently, fans weren't the only ones shocked by the news.

Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot tweeted a clip of Greg Newsome explaining his reaction to the trade Wednesday night.

“Yeah for sure, definitely came as a surprise. As soon as, you know, you saw that he kind of declined us at first, we kind of thought that it was over so, definitely it was a surprise,” Newsome said.

According to an article by Cabot, the video was taken at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse Wednesday night. The young cornerback was the first member of the Browns to speak about the team's acquisition of Watson. He strictly talked about Watson's quarterback skills, denying questions about the 22 sexual assault allegations against him.

Newsome had a breakout rookie season this past year as the Browns' 2021 first-round pick. The 21-year-old recorded nine pass deflections and 37 tackles: 33 solo and four assisted.

The Browns finished the 2021-2022 season below .500 with a record of 8-9. Next season, Cleveland will look to increase success under new leadership in Deshaun Watson.
