There was yet another massive shakeup in the NFL on Wednesday night as news broke that Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians is retiring from coaching. The Buccaneers then named former defensive coordinator Todd Bowles as the new head coach.

Upon being named the new coach, Bowles took the time to talk about what happened in the playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams last season. The Athletic‘s Buccaneers reporter Greg Auman captured his thoughts.

Bowles put it simply, saying “We blew it.” The Tampa Bay coach is referring to the final deep completion from Matthew Stafford to Cooper Kupp that set up the game-winning field goal. Remember, that happened after Tom Brady led the Buccaneers back from a 28-3 deficit, tying the game with under a minute left.

But Bowles went on to say that the playoff loss can be attributed to a lot more than one play. For three quarters, the Buccaneers were thoroughly outplayed by the Rams. You aren't going to beat a team that good when you spot them a 25-point lead. Admittedly, you did have the one player who could do it though.

Bowles will be entering his second stint as a head coach in the NFL. He was previously the head coach for the New York Jets, but struggled and was ultimately fired. However, his quarterbacks were Bryce Petty, Geno Smith, rookie Sam Darnold, among others.

This scenario in Tampa Bay is easily a far better situation in order to succeed. It's also a perfect fit as he can focus primarily on the Buccaneers defense and leave the offense to Brady and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.
