Mike Tyson expects Canelo Alvarez to come out on top in his next fight — provided he heeds his warning.
Alvarez defends his super middleweight titles against Jermell Charlo on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas. The Mexican superstar is a favorite for a number of reasons.
For starters, he's arguably the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world, so he'll naturally be a favorite over the majority of his opponents.
But then, there's the fact that he's facing the undisputed super welterweight champion in Charlo, who not only last competed back in May last year, but will also be moving up two weight classes to fight Alvarez.
And although Alvarez is shorter than Charlo, he's much more accustomed to and experienced at 168 pounds, and will undoubtedly have the power advantage over the American.
That power advantage is what Tyson sees as being the key in their title fight and a major reason why he's picking Canelo Alvarez to emerge victorious.
“I think Canelo should beat him,” Tyson told ES News (via Boxing Social). “Overpower him.”
However, Charlo has power of his own and along with what should be a speed advantage, could cause an upset especially if Alvarez's head movement isn't up to his usual standards.
Tyson referenced this by mentioning how an unnamed opponent — likely Dmitry Bivol or John Ryder– was able to land plenty of shots on him.
“But Canelo’s not moving his head nowhere,” Tyson added. “That other guy was hitting him. And that gave him the confidence, he believes he can hit Canelo.”
Alvarez last defended his super middleweight titles in May following a unanimous decision victory over Ryder.
