At last, Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net for the first time in the 2023-24 NHL regular season. Ovechkin entered Tuesday night's home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs still without a goal after four games, but he ended his drought late in the second period with a goal on the man advantage. It's not just Ovi's first goal of the season, though. It also marked the 300th time he scored a goal on the power play in his legendary career in the NHL.

The Capitals were held without a goal by the Maple Leafs until that score by the Russian forward, who took advantage of a rebound chance in front of Toronto's net to get the puck past goalie Joseph Woll.

The Capitals ultimately lost to Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs to the tune of a 4-1 score, but seeing Alex Ovechkin finally score a goal this season brings hope for Washington, which is now on a three-game losing skid. Before facing the Maple Leafs, the Caps lost to the Ottawa Senators and to the Montreal Canadiens, both on the road.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin still chasing Wayne Gretzky's record

Alexander Ovechkin, Capitals

Ovechkin isn't just chasing another Stanley Cup title with the Capitals. He is also aiming to tie and break Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL record of 894 goals. Ovi inched closer to completing that mission, but he's still going to need a whole lot more to catch the Great One.

The Capitals, who are 1-3-1, will look to snap out of their slump with a game on the road versus the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
