As Arizona's Pro Bowl wide receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, prepares for what could be his last State Farm Stadium in Glendale, the fifteen-year veteran said that he believes that rookie head coach Steve Wilks should return next season.

Despite the team's record of 3-11, Fitzgerald told NFL.com in a text message that, “We all would want him back.”

Wilks began his career as a defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears, he held the same post for the then San Diego Chargers before becoming the secondary coach for the Carolina Panthers. After Sean McDermott left Carolina to be the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Wilks was promoted to defensive coordinator, a position he held for just a year before being hired by the Cardinals.

He was replacing Bruce Arians, an offensive-minded coach who retired after the 2017 season. During the last offseason, the Cardinals drafted Josh Rosen to play quarterback with the tenth overall pick. They also signed running back David Johnson to a three-year $39 million contract extension.

Some questioned the logic of putting a defensive head coach in charge of this young offense, especially after the team fired Mike McCoy, the team's offensive coordinator after going 1-6 in their first seven games.

“I love Wilks,” Fitzgerald said. “Great dude. We all play hard for him. That's the team — not me alone — speaking on it.”

But despite the words of confidence from the face of the franchise, it still might not be enough for Wilks to keep his job following a disappointing 3-11 season.
