The St. Louis Cardinals swept the Chicago Cubs in a two-game set at the end of May after the series' first game rained out. The sweep was in the middle of a freefall down the standings for the Cubs, as they've fallen from a battle for first into the fifth spot in the National League Central. The placement of teams in this division is nowhere near set in stone, as all four teams chasing the Brewers for first are within two games of each other. The Cardinals have won four of their last six games after splitting the series' first two games, while the Cubs have lost six of their past nine. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Cardinals-Cubs prediction and pick.

Why The Cardinals Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Cardinals had won three straight games against the Cubs this season before Chicago won on Saturday afternoon. Their win streak was at four since last season, which improved after the Cubs won six consecutive during the 2023 season. The Cubs may have the Cardinals' number over a larger sample size, but the Cardinals are starting to catch up and have been on a hot streak lately to pass off the Cubs in the standings.

Why The Cubs Will Cover The Spread/Win

Miles Mikolas has some poor starts against the Cubs, allowing nine earned runs over his last 11 2/3 innings. There's reason to believe that the Cubs are in Mikolas' head, especially after last season's incident where Mikolas plunked Iain Happ in the first inning. The umpires ejected Mikolas for his role in the incident. The incident happened five days after the Cubs shelled him for 11 hits and five earned runs.

Final Cardinals-Cubs Prediction & Pick

There isn't much offense coming from either of these teams over the past ten games, and with the pitching matchup on Sunday afternoon, it may be another low-scoring game. The first game of this series ended 3-0, while the second game ended 5-1. Miles Mikolas had one of his best starts of the season in his last outing, allowing no earned runs over seven innings. The Pirates managed just one hit. It was the same for Jameson Taillon, allowing four hits and no earned runs over six innings. The starters will need to go deep into this game, as the issue with this bet is that both teams' relievers haven't been in the best form. The Cardinals relievers allow 4.11 runs/nine, while the Cubs allow 5.07.

Both teams averaged less than four runs/nine over their last ten games and have hit the under in seven of their last ten. It's the same for their matchups against each other this season, as it's gone under in three of four meetings. You can expect that to happen again in this game if Taillon and Mikolas continue their forms from their last start.
