Paul McCartney and Wings' guitarist Denny Laine has passed away at 79.
An iconic guitarist
On December 5, Laine's wife, Elizabeth Hines, took to Facebook to announce that the guitarist had passed away at 79.
“My darling husband passed away peacefully early this morning,” Hines' post began. “I was at his bedside, holding his hand as I played his favorite Christmas songs for him. He’s been singing Christmas songs the past few weeks and I continued to play Christmas songs while he’s been in ICU on a ventilator this past week.
“He and I both believed he would overcome his health setbacks and return to the rehabilitation center and eventually home. Unfortunately, his lung disease, Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), is unpredictable and aggressive; each infection weakened and damaged his lungs. He fought every day. He was so strong and brave, never complained,” she continued.
“All he wanted was to be home with me and his pet kitty, Charley, playing his gypsy guitar,” Hines said.
Denny Laine was a founding member of McCartney's first band venture after the Beatles breakup, Wings. He joined the band in 1971 and remained with them until the band's dissolution in 1981.
He was also known for his work with the Moody Blues. Laine played with the band from 1964-66. As a member of the band, Laine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Paul McCartney and Wings were an iconic band. The trio of McCartney, his wife Linda, and Laine recorded several major hits in the '70s. Their third album, Band on the Run, celebrated its 50th anniversary today on December 5. He also toured with Wings on their five tours.
