It’s been a while since any new developments about Antonio Gates’ possible return to the Los Angeles Chargers have come out. The last anyone heard on the topic was at the end of last month, when Gates’ agent said he was still “hopeful” that a deal could be struck with the Bolts.

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn was once again asked about the veteran tight end, and he revealed that the talks between the two sides are still ongoing.

“We’ve talked to Antonio and we’re still talking with him,” Lynn said per Eric D. Williams of ESPN. “I don’t know where that’s going to go. We need to make more plays at the tight end position. We dropped some balls today that should have been caught. I expected that to get better.”

The Chargers tight ends did not cover themselves in glory during the team’s first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals as they committed five drops. While starter Virgil Green is gradually growing a nice connection with Philip Rivers, the less-than-encouraging performance of his backups has once again highlighted the need for a proven pass-catcher like Gates at the position.

It remains to be seen if the Chargers do actually decide to bring back the veteran after opting to part ways with him earlier this offseason. But if they don’t bring him back, they would be wise to consider other tight-end options available on the market since their current crop of tight ends still has some significant question marks surrounding them.
