The Los Angeles Chargers have ventured through the first eight weeks of the season without the services of Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa due to a foot injury that has continued to linger on.

The Chargers have remained optimistic about the entire situation with their eyes focused on bringing him back at some point in the next few weeks. However, Bosa doesn't appear to be making the progress that was hoped as he's not near what the team had envisioned at this point in time, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Los Angeles Chargers star defensive end Joey Bosa is making progress from his midfoot sprain, but he is not, in the words of one source, “anywhere near ready to play right now.”

There had initially been hoping that he could return shortly after the Week 8 bye that would put in play to be ready to help the team power through the second half of the year. This has simply not been the case as he hasn't been able to push through the recovery from the foot injury that arose during training camp back in August.

The Chargers have been able to get by without him in the mix defensively as the team has won five out of their first seven games played that put them on track to contend for the playoffs. At the same time, his absence has had a notable impact their pass rush with 18.0 sacks, which ranks 21st in the league through this point of the season.

Bosa has quickly emerged as one of the top young defensive ends in his first two seasons in the NFL. He recorded back-to-back double-digit sack totals in his first two years and is also coming off a career-high 12.5 sacks. This also includes tallying 70 tackles and four forced fumbles while playing in all 16 regular-season games last year, earning his first Pro Bowl selection.
