Despite being the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs have already set their eyes on the future. Specifically, a future that includes star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who they signed to a massive 10-year, $450 million contract last July, making him the highest paid player in sports.

But when the two sides inked the deal, they also made sure to include an insurance policy in the contract that would protect the Chiefs’ top investment. This insurance policy, according to ESPN’s Field Yates, would protect the team in the event that Mahomes is unable to play due to injury. Part of the insurance policy also includes salary cap implications, giving Kansas City a salary cap credit that repays a portion of Mahomes’ hit against the team’s salary cap, according to USA Today Sports.

The 24-year-old quarterback did miss time during the 2019 season, suffering a dislocated kneecap during a Week 7 match against the Denver Broncos. Mahomes did return after a couple of weeks, missing just two games total.

The 2018 NFL Most Valuable Player then went on to lead Kansas City to its first title since 1969-70 and being named Super Bowl MVP in the process. An insurance policy in his contract would be important for the Chiefs, since it guarantees their quarterback a lot of money.

Mahomes’ contract extension, the largest in NFL history and would keep him in a Chiefs uniform until 2031, could grow as much as $503 million. Some of the stipulations in the contract include an injury guarantee worth $140 million and a no-trade clause. Before signing the contract extension, he still had two years and $27.6 million left on his current deal with the Chiefs, with the extension ensuring that he will remain in Kansas City for the next 12 seasons.
