Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman BJ Thompson has been released from the hospital after experiencing cardiac arrest, his agent Chris Turnage told NFL Network.

“The family thanks everyone for their prayers and wants to especially thank the Chiefs medical and training staff for their rapid response and professionalism throughout this situation,” Turnage said in a statement.

Thompson suffered a seizure and then went into cardiac arrest at a Chiefs special teams meeting last Thursday. He received CPR from Kansas City's medical staff before being transported to the hospital. He was released from the hospital on Monday night.

The 25-year-old was sedated and placed on a ventilator on Thursday evening, but was awake and alert by the next day.

Thankfully, it appears that Thompson is going to be just fine.

Thompson, who played his collegiate football at Baylor and Stephen F. Austin, was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the NFL Draft last spring. He played in one game during his rookie campaign, logging a couple of tackles.

Kansas City begins its mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.

The Chiefs are looking to make history in 2024

The Chiefs are coming off of back-to-back Super Bowl championships and are aiming to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls next season.

Now, it should be noted that the Green Bay Packers did win three straight NFL championships in the 1960s, which was before the Super Bowl became an event. So, technically, the Chiefs would not be the first club in league history to three-peat.

However, this would still be an amazing feat either way.

Not only that, but Kansas City has won three out of the last five Super Bowls and has participated in four of them, making the Chiefs a modern-day dynasty.

Many have labeled Kansas City the favorite to win the title again next season, even though oddsmakers like the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl this past February.

Kansas City made some moves to bolster its roster this offseason, specifically targeting the receiving corps. It signed wide receiver Marquise Brown in free agency and then selected University of Texas standout Xavier Worthy in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Chiefs actually had problems with their weapons in 2023, as Rashee Rice represented the team's only truly reliable wide out. It appears that is about to change in 2024. Of course, Rice is facing some very serious legal issues and may end up serving a lengthy suspension next season, so that may obviously throw a wrench into things.

Regardless, so long as Patrick Mahomes is under center, Kansas City will once again be a feared opponent. Regardless of what the oddsmakers say, the Chiefs should absolutely be considered the top dogs until someone knocks them off their throne.

The 49ers may have the most talented roster in football, but until they actually beat Kansas City, it's hard to legitimately call them the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
