The Kansas City Chiefs are signing defensive end Taco Charlton after he was released by the Miami Dolphins earlier this week, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero (h/t Adam Maya of NFL.com):

Taco Charlton‘s reclamation project will continue in Kansas City.

The former first-round pick, who was released by the Dolphins on Thursday, is signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. He'll be playing for his third team in the past year alone.

Charlton was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. But he struggled to see much of the field with the Dallas Cowboys, who waived him after he suffered an injury in the final preseason game of 2019.

The Dolphins claimed Charlton on waivers shortly thereafter, and he did manage five in 10 games (including five starts). However, Charlton has offered little in the way of steady production or durability during his young career.

But it makes sense for the Chiefs to take a flier on Charlton.

Kansas City's front seven faces some questions ahead of the 2020 season, most notably with respect to defensive tackle Chris Jones.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Jones ahead of free agency, but he has not shown any indication he will sign the tender, and a holdout could very well be in the cards.

Naturally, this would deplete the amount of depth on the front line. Signing Charlton, however, gives the Chiefs another body while they try to sort out an extension with Jones.

There is also a chance the Chiefs could look to shift Charlton inside, or even move Frank Clark or Alex Okafor inside and experiment some with Charlton as an edge rusher. Regardless, Charlton will get another opportunity as he joins his third team in the last year.
