Patrick Mahomes has worked tirelessly to get to where he is in his career, and sometimes he needs a break. After news broke out that he was signing a massive extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes cracked a joke on why he wasn't present at a team workout.

The reports began with multiple outlets revealing that the Chiefs and Mahomes were closing in on a historic 10-year extension. Then, just hours later, ESPN's Adam Schefter shared that Mahomes would be earning $450 million over the 10 years. However, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport would outdo Schefter, exclaiming that Mahomes' new deal is actually worth $503 million.

Before Mahomes' new mega-deal, the highest contract value for a player in the NFL was Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons. Back in 2018, Ryan inked a five-year, $150 million extension with the Falcons.

Besides becoming the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, Mahomes shatters the NFL record for the largest contract. Just for comparison, you could multiply Ryan's entire contract with Atlanta by three, and it would still be less than what Mahomes is going to make.

As he enters his fourth season with the Chiefs in 2020, Mahomes still has two years remaining on his current rookie contract. Altogether, the former No. 10 pick is slated to make $27.6 million over the next two seasons. Coming off of his first Super Bowl victory at 24 years old, Mahomes has shown he has a chance to be one of the greatest quarterbacks to suit up in the NFL.

With the unusual circumstances of the offseason, Kansas City wants to have their players to spend as much time preparing themselves for the upcoming season. While Mahomes is the most important piece on their team, they'll excuse him for one day so he can celebrate his new contract.
