The Kansas City Chiefs want to lock up Patrick Mahomes, and Mahomes wants to stay with the Chiefs. That much we know.

But how much will it cost Kansas City to do that?

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network gave an update on the situation Thursday night, saying that “both sides are committed to getting a deal done,” but that both sides also want to build a Chiefs dynasty.

That may be fairly difficult to do if Mahomes eats up all of Kansas City's money. The good news is that both sides are aware of that.

Pelissero notes that while Mahomes' new deal will almost certainly make him the NFL's highest-paid player, there is an acute understanding of how his contract will affect the rest of the roster.

So perhaps Mahomes will accept a hometown discount?

Pelissero added that the most likely timetable for Mahomes' extension will be after the draft, so we have a little while to go before both parties start getting into specifics.

Mahomes just led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title in 50 years, completing 26 of his 42 throws for 286 yards, a couple of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions en route to a 31-20 victory.

The 24-year-old took home Super Bowl MVP honors in the process.

Mahomes, who played his collegiate football at Texas Tech, was originally selected by Kansas City with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He spent his rookie campaign learning behind Alex Smith, but that ensuing offseason, the Chiefs traded Smith, clearing the way for Mahomes to start.

Mahomes responded by throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns to win the league MVP award in 2018, and this past season, he threw for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns.
