Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has put together quite the resume so early in his career. However, it seems he is still far from a finished product.

Reading defenses is considered to be a rather fundamental skill for a franchise quarterback. Mahomes admitted during an appearance on HBO's The Shop that he only truly learned to do it midway through the 2019 NFL season.

“I didn't understand how to read defenses until, like, halfway through last year,” he said. “I understood coverages, but being able to pick up little tendencies defenses do, stuff that Brady and them have done — I was just playing.”

The revelation from Mahomes is both surprising and a scary notion for teams around the league. It is also further proof that there seems to be no limit on his potential growth under center.

Mahomes also touched up on the fact that he has only been playing quarterback since his junior year of high school. In many ways, he is still learning about the intricacies of the position outside of just his normal feel for the game. Unlike the ability to read defenses, the natural talent that he possesses is not something that can be taught.

Mahomes has already won a league MVP and a Super Bowl in his first two years as a full-fledged starter without all the benefits of pre-snap recognition. It is safe to say that the sky is the limit now that he has managed to add this element of the game to his repertoire.
