It was nothing short of a strong offensive showing by the Kansas City Chiefs in their 42-27 win in the season opener against the New England Patriots.
Kansas City racked up 537 total offensive yards while scoring six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing). There was simply no answer by the Patriots to slow down the Chiefs on Thursday night, which Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce credits to the defending champions not showing his team any respect on the offensive side of the ball.
From Tom Curran of CSNNE.com.
“I’m not sure what it was,” Kelce said. “It might have been the lack of respect they had for Alex’s arm, the lack of respect for our running back. The defense that they were presenting, I thought they would have gone a different way. We went out there and we executed given what they presented and we came out with a win.”
Kelce may have hit the nail on the head, as Alex Smith has developed the reputation as being a game manager rather than a quarterback who can lead his team to a win with his arm. Smith disproved that reputation against the Patriots, completing 28 of 35 passes for 368 yards with four touchdowns and an incredible 148.6 passer rating.
Meanwhile, rookie running back Kareem Hunt got past a fumble on the Chiefs' first offensive play of the game by putting together a historic performance, becoming the first player to record 246 yards from scrimmage in his debut since the 1970 merger while also scoring three touchdowns.
Regardless of if the Patriots showed the Chiefs any respect, it was a thoroughly impressive offensively display that should have their fan base highly encouraged about what may lie ahead, despite the season-ending injury to Eric Berry.
