Cillian Murphy's first film after Oppenheimer, Small Things Like These, has gotten a huge Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale) update.
A Cillian Murphy Berlin Film Festival premiere
It was announced on January 18 that Small Things Like These will open the Berlin Film Festival on February 15. This is the world premiere for the new film, which is an Irish and Belgian production. Additionally, the film will be screened in Competition.
Tim Mielants directed the film based on a screenplay from Enda Walsh. Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, and Emily Watson star alongside Murphy in the film.
Previously, Mielants and Murphy worked together on Peaky Blinders. Walsh is also a frequent collaborator of Murphy's. As stated in Barlinale's announcement, Small Things Like These “takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own.”
Furthermore, “the film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalen laundries – horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform ‘fallen young women.'”
Big Things Films, Murphy and Alan Moloney's company, produced Small Things Like These. Catherine Magee, Matt Damon, and Drew Vinton also produce the film. Ben Affleck, Kevin Halloran, and Michael Joe (for Artists Equity) all executive produce the film. Artists Equity and Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann financed the film and it was co-produced in Belgium by Wilder Contnet.
FilmNation Entertainment will handle the film's international sales.
A statement
“With Small Things Like These, Tim Mielants tells the story of a man of few words, with wide open eyes, as clear as the skies of Ireland,” Berlinale's Artistic Director, Carlo Chatrain, said. “In The Quiet Girl we already had sense of Claire Keegan’s skill in portraying small, apparently simple characters and making them unforgettable; here her delicate, rich and yet down-to-earth writing finds a great interpreter in Cillian Murphy.
“We are confident that this story that allies the kindness to be directed to the more fragile, and the willpower to stand up against injustice, will resonate with everyone. We are looking forward to launching this ‘quiet’ yet quite exceptional film at the start of Zeitgeist Irland 24, a year-long celebration of Irish culture in Germany,” Chatrain added.
Cillian Murphy is hot off his award-winning performance in Oppenheimer. He will likely continue picking up award nominations and wins through the Oscars season.
