One of the more surprising moves this NBA offseason was the Los Angeles Clippers and Doc Rivers trading his son, Austin Rivers to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Marcin Gortat. There were some who questioned if Doc would ever trade his son, and when he finally did it seemed to come out of the blue.

TMZ Sports caught up with Doc, who said the trade was “the right thing for all of us.” He also said that he thinks Austin will do good in Washington.

Austin agrees and is excited about the new opportunity. There were a lot of distractions for Austin that came while playing under his dad, and most he couldn't control. This is a fresh start for him, where he can just focus on playing basketball.

“This is a great opportunity for me to come here and just compete and play without all of that stuff that comes with it,” Rivers said, referring to his time playing under his father via The Washington Post. “But more importantly, just being on a playoff team, man. That’s the most fun. I mean, not making the playoffs this year was horrendous. … Just being on a playoff team is very exciting for me.”

Rivers should come in and be the backup behind John Wall and will be a good veteran presence that has played in the big moments before.

“The way he plays fits in real well with what we’re trying to do, and that’s move up and down the floor a little bit more,” team President Ernie Grunfeld said. “Be able to switch out on the perimeter and, the more players you have that are versatile and that can create not only for themselves but for others, the better off you are.”

The Clippers, on the other hand, will have a vastly different roster next season.
