West Virginia hosts the former top team in the nation and reigning NCAA champs, Baylor on Tuesday night. It's time to continue our college basketball odds series with a Baylor-West Virginia prediction and pick.

Baylor started out the season 15-0 but are coming off consecutive losses to good teams. No. 19 Texas Tech and unranked Oklahoma State upset Baylor last week and now the former champs are have another tough Big-12 test. West Virginia is 13-3 and are off to a fantastic start to the season. A win today would certainly put them in the top-25 rankings.

Why Baylor Could Cover The Spread

We all know Baylor should cover this spread. They are capable of beating arguably any team in the nation. They just have to get back to the groove that they recently fell out of. This is an elite scoring team that now averages just under 80 points per game. They were above that number for a while but since their last two losses, that average went down a little. Baylor is led by their guards who all contribute on a regular basis. James Akinjo leads the team in scoring but it can be any of the guards on any given night that get the job done for Baylor.

Baylor is just 9-7-1 against the spread this year. They will cover this spread if they don't allow West Virginia guard Taz Sherman to beat them. He's having a great season for the Mountaineers averaging 18.9 points per game. He will likely play well, but Baylor must make sure that's doesn't beat them if the game is close late in the second half.

Why West Virginia Could Cover The Spread

West Virginia can cover this spread if Sherman leads them in a close game. With the spread currently where it is at, West Virginia just needs to keep it close in order to cover. They don't need to win the game and I do think they have a great chance of doing so. Baylor could easily come out and dominate this game because of their talent, but we can't ignore the season West Virginia has had. They started out 11-1 and have wins against No. 15 UCONN and unranked Oklahoma State. They have losses to No. 17 Texas and No. 9 Kansas and so they have put themselves in a position to be successful.

West Virginia is 8-8 against the spread. They desperately need their defense to step up Tuesday night. If that happens then West Virginia should be able to keep this close. They can't let Akinjo and company shoot the lights out like they are accustomed to doing.

Final Baylor-West Virginia Prediction & Pick

Because of Baylor's last two performances, this is a tough one to choose. I believe Baylor is the better team, but out of their last three wins, they have only won by 12 or fewer points. I think this game has the making to be close, so I'm going to take West Virginia to cover this spread. They have the scoring ability to get it done so take the Mountaineers to cover and have a chance to upset Baylor once again.

Final Baylor-West Virginia Prediction & Pick: West Virginia +6.5 (-114)
