Why Alabama Could Cover the Spread

The Alabama Crimson Tide continue to dominate this season with a 10-1 record. They are coming off a 42-35 home win last week against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Heisman candidate Bryce Young threw for 559  yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Though Alabama failed to cover the same spread (-20.5), they still came out on top in a high-scoring affair. The Crimson Tide offense is second in the nation in points per game (44.0), fifth in total yards per game (509.4), and sixth in red-zone scoring percentage (93.48%). Sophomore quarterback Bryce Young is one of the top in the nation, having thrown for 3,584 passing yards and 38 touchdowns. He has been extremely impressive all season long for the Crimson Tide.

This season, Alabama's defense has been solid, giving up 20.3 points on 313.5 yards per game (9th). They rank 10th in opponent rush play percentage (47.6%). Opposing teams are only averaging 85.9 rushing yards per game against Alabama. Teams have no other choice than to throw the ball against Alabama because the offense usually goes up a few scores quickly, leaving most teams playing from behind. The Crimson Tide are 11-2 against the spread in their last 13 games following an against the spread loss last week.

Why Auburn Could Cover the Spread

The Auburn Tigers have won four of their last six home games. They will look to snap a three-game skid in this SEC matchup. Quarterback Bo Nix is out of the lineup as well, so things could get out of hand early if the Tigers defense cannot stop Young and company. The Auburn offense is averaging 27.1 points on 417.0 yards per game. Freshman TJ Finley is starting in place of Nix on Saturday. He threw for 188 yards and one touchdown in last week's loss at South Carolina. The Alabama defense is good when it wants to be, but it also frequently gives up some big plays. The Tigers should lean on running back Tank Bigsby to rush the ball and keep the Alabama offense off the field. Bigsby has run for 980 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

The trouble spot for Auburn is on the defensive side of the ball. It will be tough for them to stop Young and this Alabama offense if they cannot produce takeaways. Therefore, they will need to force turnovers to keep this game within reach. Strange things happen whenever these two teams play each other, rewinding to when Mac Jone threw two pick-sixes to lose the game in 2019. The Crimson Tide are 2-6 against the spread in their last eight meetings at Auburn.

Final Alabama-Auburn Prediction & Pick

The Crimson Tide should roll in this game without Bo Nix starting at quarterback. However, after last week's debacle in the second half against Arkansas, it's hard to trust the Crimson Tide on the road. These matchups are always close between both teams and if Auburn stops Alabama in the red zone, they should keep this game within the spread.

Take the points with the Tigers on Saturday at home, but buy an extra point to get the hook over three touchdowns.

FINAL ALABAMA-AUBURN PREDICTION & PICK: Auburn +21.5, buy one point
