Why Oklahoma State Could Cover the Spread

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are off to a terrific start to their 2021 campaign. They have won the last two games at home by an average margin of 9.5 points. The offense is averaging 26 points and 380.8 yards per game. They are led by quarterback Spencer Sanders who has 781 passing yards and five touchdowns on the season. Running back Jaylen Warren has 512 rushing yards and six touchdowns. The strength of the Cowboys comes through the air, where they have five different receivers with at least 120 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Cowboys are solid, giving up only 19.2 points and 297.5 yards per game to opponents which both rank in the top 20 in the nation. In their last 16 games after an against the spread win. The Cowboys are 12-3-1 and they are 4-1 against the spread in their last five after a straight-up win.

Why Texas Could Cover the Spread

The Texas Longhorns looked unstoppable in their last outing for the first half of the game. The Longhorns went up a quick 28 points in the first quarter and then led by 18 at halftime. The second half was a complete meltdown as they scored only 10 total points and blew the lead late in the game. The good thing is, the Longhorns are still 4-2 overall and their offense is scoring the 4th most points in the nation with 44.5 points per game. Quarterback Casey Thompson is throwing for 1,095 yards and 14 touchdowns to go along with 91 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The Longhorns defense has come up big in some close games this season, however, they are giving up 441 yards per game to opponents and 29.2 points per game. Texas is 4-1 against the spread in their last five turf games and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games overall dating back to the 2020 season.

Final Oklahoma State-Texas Prediction & pick

This game should be a very high-scoring affair with both offenses getting up and down the field with no problem. It will come down to who has the ball for the last possession. The Cowboys have been impressive so far this season and they have shown resilience against some pretty good teams. After the Texas meltdown last week, it is difficult to bet on them to cover the spread. Therefore, I would take the Oklahoma State Cowboys against the spread.
