The Indianapolis Colts coaching staff is excited about Marlon Mack and Jonathan Taylor working together out of the backfield. Most teams like to have a 1-2 punch coming out of the backfield, but Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni sees his guys as a little different.

Sirianni says the plan is for the Colts to run a ball this year, which means Mack and Taylor will be leaned on like a 1-1 punch:

“We know we want to run the football. We know a lot of the good running teams in this league and in the past have had good one-two punches,” Sirianni said via the Colts team website. “It feels like it’s just a one-one punch though because we have two such exceptional backs.”

Sirianni thinks both guys have all the skills to work perfectly in the offense. And even though they have different running styles, they can work together to wear down opposing defenses:

“They both have exceptional speed, and they both have ability to make you miss, and they both have the ability to break arm-tackles and run with power,” Sirianni said. “They have some different running styles, but again they’re both complete backs. I think that’s a fantastic problem to have, is to have two guys like that you can feed the football to. It’s only going to help our running game.”

These are both players who are used to be starting pitchers, so it will be an adjustment for both guys trying to adjust to splitting carries.

If they can work that out, the Colts offense is going to be in great shape this season as they try to compete for an AFC South title.
