Fallout continues from Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio's ridiculous comparison of January 6th insurrectionists to protestors of racial justice.

On Thursday, NAACP president Derrick Johnson released a statement calling for Del Rio's resignation or firing in wake of the veteran coach's “offensive and ignorant” comments.

“It’s time for Jack Del Rio to resign or be terminated,” Johnson said, per Pro Football Talk. “His comments could not have been more offensive and ignorant. The January 6th insurrectionan attempted coupwas far from a ‘dust-up.’ Each day we learn more and more on just how close our democracy came to autocracy. Downplaying the insurrection by comparing it to nationwide protests, which were in response to a public lynching, is twisted. You can’t coach a majority Black team while turning your back on the Black community. It’s time for you to pack up and step off the field.”

Del Rio ignited a firestorm on Wednesday, calling the January 6th, 2021 coup attempt that left seven people dead a “dust-up” and comparing the actions of capitol rioters to the hundreds of thousands who marched in support of Black lives in the summer of 2020 after the murder of Geroge Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

The 59-year-old's offensive remarks came one day before the United States House Select Committee began public hearings on the insurrection instigated by former President Donald Trump and his Republican cohorts.

“I can look at images on the TV, people's livelihoods are being destroyed, businesses are being burned down, no problem,” Del Rio said, baselessly alluding to Black Lives Matter protestors. “And then we have a dustup at the Capitol, nothing burned down, and we're going to make that a major deal. I just think it's kind of two standards, and if we apply the same standard and we're going to be reasonable with each other, let's have a discussion.”

Del Rio quickly apologized for his comments, specifying that it was “negligent and wrong” to refer to the events of January 6th as a “dust-up.” The Commanders assistant refused to take back his criticism of racial justice protestors, though, while insisting he has “love, respect and support” for all Commanders players, the vast majority of whom are Black.

In late June 2020, less than three weeks after Trump had law enforcement officials clear a group of protestors from outside the White House with tear gas and other means of force for a staged photo opportunity, Del Rio proudly confirmed his rumored support of the former President.
