Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young is reportedly progressing from the stinger injury he suffered in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns, but he is still not cleared and is expected to meet with a doctor this week with his status for week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals uncertain, according to Ben Standig of The Athletic. Ron Rivera spoke about Young's situation.

“The biggest thing I can tell you is the guy is practicing and doing everything we need him to do right now as he's getting ready for the opener,” Ron Rivera said, via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. “I have no idea what the doctor's going to do, but I do know right now that he's told him he can continue to progress and get himself ready to go. So, until then, there's nothing we can tell you, nothing we can say. We'll have the medical report come out on Wednesday.”

Chase Young has struggled with injuries over the last few years. In 2021, he tore his ACL, and in 2022 he struggled to return from that injury. That resulted in the Commanders declining Young's fifth-year option, meaning that this is a contract year for him.

It would be a detriment to Young if he were to struggle staying on the field in 2023, as he hopes to secure a contract for his future, whether that be with the Commanders or another team. It will be interesting to see what Young's status is for week 1 against the Cardinals when the injury report comes out on Wednesday.
