On Friday, the Dallas Cowboys made a couple of transactions, one of which is raising eyebrows. According to NFL reporter Dov Kleiman, the Cowboys signed linebacker Christian Sam to a contract. They also fellow linebacker Devonte Bond on injured reserve and signed kicker Lirim Hajrullahu.

Sam most recently played for the New Orleans Breakers in the USFL. Interestingly, he began the season with the Tampa Bay Bandits but was released. Apparently both the Breakers and Cowboys saw something in the 26-year-old linebacker.

Sam was initially drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. However, just prior to the start of the 2018-2019 regular season, he was injured and placed on IR. The Patriots then released him in August of 2019. The then-rookie linebacker did earn a Super Bowl ring though. New England defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl 53.

He was later signed to the practice squad of the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions before being drafted by the Bandits in the USFL last year.

Christian Sam finished his lone season in the USFL with 53 tackles, 35 of them solo. He also picked off a pass. Devonte Bond, who the Cowboys placed on IR Friday, previously played 34 career NFL games and the Cowboys were likely to use him as depth. It may be unlikely that Sam will make the final cut down to 53 men for the Cowboys when the season rolls around, but given the injury history of the position, it's not out of the realm of possibility we see him in an NFL game with Dallas.
