Multiple teams are already planning on being buyers for next month’s MLB trade deadline. For the Chicago Cubs, they are reportedly aiming to complete a fire sale for the second consecutive year.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman provided notable updates on how several teams are looking to approach this season’s trade deadline. For the Cubs, he noted that they “will surely” ship off catcher Willson Contreras and closer David Robertson.

Cubs outfielder Ian Happ has been in the rumor mill regarding a possible departure from Chicago in the coming weeks. However, Heyman did add that in regard to the versatile outfielder, who is under team control for one more year, it “seems unlikely” that he will end up finding a new home in the majors ahead of Aug. 2.

Contreras has been linked with several teams as of late, including the New York Mets. Still, the current NL East leaders are reportedly not “likely to give up the prospects” needed in order to acquire the soon-to-be-free agent. From Contreras’ standpoint, he did recently note that he would be open to staying put in Chicago for the remainder of his career.

Both Robertson and Happ have upped their trade value over the course of the first half of the season. Robertson has so far posted a 2.10 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched, while Happ has made a keen case to represent the Cubs at this year’s MLB All-Star Game thanks to his OPS+ of 129 to go along with 40 RBI recorded in 83 games played.

The Cubs currently sit in fourth place in the NL Central standings with a 34-51 record.
