Over Memorial Day weekend, filmmaker David Lynch teased his fans about a new project. The project has been unveiled as Chrystabell’s new album. The singer is the actress who played the 2018 third season known as Twin Peaks: The Return’s FBI Agent Tammy Preston, Variety reported.

In the teaser video, Lynch said, “Ladies and gentlemen. Something is coming along for you to see and hear! And it will be coming along on June 5.”

The “something for you to see and hear” was the music video for Sacred Memories, his new album with the singer, which will be released Aug. 2 under the Sacred Bones banner. The music label is also home to non-mainstream artists such as Jim Jarmusch’s SQÜRL, Caleb Landry Jones and John Carpenter.

Something for you to see and hear

Although some of the filmmakers’ fans may have been disappointed that the “something” new wasn’t a movie or TV series — especially a Twin Peaks sequel — they won’t miss Lynch’s trademark unique vibe since he also directed the music video. The video has slightly strange flickering images of Chrystabell’s face, complete with an ambient, otherworldly sound.

X users had commented that they thought the announcement could be a new Twin Peaks season, a new movie or the long-rumored TV series called Unrecorded Night or Wisteria. The long-gestating project was placed on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a May Q&A with Tulpa Forum, a fansite, Lynch’s producer Sabrina Sutherland explained, “‘Unrecorded Night’ was a non-‘Twin Peaks’ series that was going to shoot at Netflix but was canceled when the pandemic hit.”

“There’s always a chance we can pick it up again, but David has been enjoying his artwork and music endeavors, so we haven’t gone back to it,” she added.

Can we call this a David Lynch comeback?

The filmmaker’s last major directing effort was the 2017 reboot of Twin Peaks for Showtime. His last feature film was the 2006 movie Inland Empire. Before that, he directed music videos for artists such as Interpol.

For the last few years, the four-time Academy Award nominee has been spending his time promoting transcendental meditation. He even has his own name on a tertiary school, for the Maharishi International University, the David Lynch Graduate School of Cinematic Arts, in Fairfield, Iowa.

Lynch earned his Oscar nominations for best adapted screenplay and best director for 1980’s The Elephant Man, another two for directing for 1986’s Blue Velvet and 2001’s Mulholland Drive. In 2020, he was awarded an honorary Oscar. In 2022, he was in Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical Oscar-nominated film The Fablemans as John Ford, the legendary filmmaker.

For Dune fans, Lynch directed the first live-action adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel released in 1984. The film performed poorly at the box office, grossing only $30.9 million on a $40 million to $42 million budget. The director has largely disowned the movie.

The filmmaker also hosts the comedy news program Weather Report, where he gives — what else — weather reports in Los Angeles with Laura Dern.
