The Hollywood trend of revisiting and reviving successful IPs continue with Reese Witherspoon's Legally Blonde and its planned spinoff series at Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline reported.

Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine production company are teaming up with the studio. The series is currently in development at Amazon MGM, Deadline's sources said.

Another project further along in the process is under Gossip Girl developers and executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The plot of the project is still under wraps. Witherspoon is also involved through her production company.

And yet another project may be part of the expansion of the Legally Blonde universe. However, it's still in its beginning stages.

The Resurrection of Reese Witherspoon's Legally Blonde

It was reported by the entertainment site last year that the movie franchise was one of the titles from the MGM slate that could be considered for both film and TV series development.

Legally Blonde was released in 2001 based on Amanda Brown's 2011 novel of the same name. The story follows Elle Woods (Witherspoon) who gets into Harvard Law. It was a pop culture phenomenon and spawned memes that are used to this day. Examples are the iconic, “What? Like it's hard?” which was Elle's response to her ex-boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) questioning her admission to Harvard Law; and the bend-and-snap move.

Its sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde was released in 2003. In 2009, the direct-to-video spinoff Legally Blondes was released. It was supposed to be a pilot for possible sequel. There has been a third installment for Witherspoon's franchise for several years now. It's being co-written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor.

Savage and Schwartz's most recent projects include the Nancy Drew series with four seasons and the five-season Dynasty reboot, both of which aired on The CW, City on Fire on Apple TV+ and Max's reboot of Gossip Girl which ran for two season and canceled early last year. They are also currently developing a reboot of Sweet Valley, based on the massively popular Sweet Valley series from Francine Pascal.

Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine recently produced the series adaptation of Daisy Jones & the Six on Prime Video, based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's 2019 novel of the same name. The production company is currently working on the upcoming season of the HBO series Big Little Lies.

The Law of the Gen-Z Blonde

RECOMMENDED (Article Continues Below)

With Savage and Schwartz's teen-focused series credentials, it may be reasonable to assume that the Legally Blonde series will take the audience back to Elle Woods' days at Harvard Law. The first film ended with Elle giving the class' graduation speech and a pending proposal from Emmett (Luke Wilson).

However, they might go on another direction since this has been billed as a spinoff series. They could focus on someone who was inspired by Elle's story to follow in her footsteps.

As mentioned before, the film became a cultural phenomenon so much so that months before the film's July release in 2001, the Harvard Law Bulletin published an article, In Defense of Blondes. In 2019, the American Bar Association credited the movie for influencing a generation of women to pursue law as a career.

Regardless, I'm excited to see Elle Woods again or her Gen-Z counterpart.
