With some days in between preseason games, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to bring back an old event to generate excitement for the upcoming regular season. The Sixers held a team scrimmage Saturday afternoon under the watch of Doc Rivers in the Chase Fieldhouse (home of the Delaware Blue Coats) that was free to the public. The team split up into two groups and faced off in an exhibition of two 10-minute halves.

While fans got to see some of their favorite players up close and personal, it was also a chance for guys to keep working their way into a rotation spot. As we know, Rivers still has some decisions to make before the season opener in 11 days for the Sixers.

The biggest choice that still needs to be made involves the starting lineup. Ben Simmons appears to be in no rush to return to the Sixers and has left the point guard spot vacant. Now it is on Rivers to choose who should replace the disgruntled All-Star as the team's fifth starter.

Tyrese Maxey took a majority of the reps with the starters during training camp, but Rivers has still not named him the official starter for the Sixers. Through two preseason games, Maxey and Shake Milton have gotten a chance to start at point guard.

Both guards are deserving of a chance to start, which is why Rivers is in no rush to make a final choice. Following the scrimmage held by the Sixers on Saturday, he gave his thoughts on the different elements each guard brings to the lineup.

“Shake probably spaces the floor better with his shot. Maxey gives us the speed. Both are learning how to be playmakers and run the team. Shake is definitely ahead of Maxey defensively right now,” said Rivers.

Based on his comments, it's safe to say Rivers is still up in the air on who he wants to start at point guard to open the season for the Sixers. That said, he credits two very important areas for Milton that just might make him a better fit.

The first is his outside shot. Some might forget because his percentage took a dip last season with the Sixers, but Milton has the potential to be a very capable outside shooter in this league. His three-point shooting was a major catalyst in him bursting on the scene during the 2019-2020 season when he shot 43% from deep on decent volume. With all the gravity that Joel Embiid will garner, Milton would greatly benefit from all the open looks.

Defense, size more importantly, is the other factor that could give Milton the edge over Maxey. At six-foot-two, Seth Curry is somewhat undersized for the shooting guard position. Flanking him with a six-foot-five Milton and his seven-foot wingspan would give the Sixers some optionality when defending opposing backcourts.

Starting a pair of six-foot-two guards could make life difficult for the Sixers on the defensive end.

Rivers still has time to come to a decision and two preseason games to experiment with for the Sixers. It could simply come down to a matter of preference, but Rivers certainly made a strong case for Milton to move into the starting lineup.
