The Miami Dolphins are entering one of the most important off-seasons in recent memory. They've been on the cusp of a playoff berth two years in a row. Now they have a chance to revamp the roster to take that final step towards the postseason. Miami has the most cap space in the NFL with over $60 million, so they should be looking to make some huge signings. A couple of bad signings would likely cripple the Dolphins' cap situation over the next couple of seasons, so avoiding bad contracts is absolutely crucial here.

Here are two free agents the Dolphins should stay away from in the 2022 offseason.

2 Free Agents the Dolphins Must Avoid

2. Mike Williams

Mike Williams is coming off of the best season of his career. He fills a position of need for Miami as a wide receiver. Despite those facts, he isn't a great fit for the Dolphins. Williams primarily functioned as a deep threat for the Los Angeles Chargers last year, working with Justin Herbert to create a deadly downfield attack.

His average depth of target last season was over 11 yards, which, shockingly enough, was the lowest number of his career. The Dolphins aren't exactly known for their blistering deep passing behind quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa's passes traveled 6.8 yards through the air on average, one of the lowest numbers in the league. Rookie head coach Mike McDaniel will likely look to keep that number low with another RPO-filled scheme. This just isn't a good fit.

Williams is also a bit of a one-hit wonder. He's always been a solid receiver, but last season was his only truly outstanding year. Despite how good his numbers looked, he disappeared for long stretches of the year. In a four-game stretch beginning in October, Williams failed to surpass 60 yards receiving in a game. It's hard to justify spending big money on an inconsistent player who doesn't fit the scheme well in any way.

Don't forget the fact that Williams is also injured often. The risk simply isn't worth the possible reward with Williams in this offense.

1. Brandon Scherff

Signing a big-name offensive lineman seems like it's exactly what the Dolphins need, and it is. That big-name offensive lineman just cannot be Brandon Scherff. Scherff has been one of the best guards in the league for years now, but his injury history makes him a scary prospect for a huge contract.

The last time the University of Iowa product played a full season was in 2016, and he's only getting older. It seems unwise to use a huge chunk of cap space to bring in a player who likely won't be able to make it through a full season without missing significant time.

Miami has invested a ton of draft picks in their offensive line in the last few seasons. Signing Scherff would only clog up the depth chart and stunt the development of several potential starters. Austin Jackson was a first-round selection in 2020, and Scherff would be taking his roster spot.

Fellow guard Robert Hunt was Miami's best offensive lineman last season, and he's from the same draft class as Jackson. Someone has to lose their spot to make room for free agents, and it doesn't make much sense to bench either of those guys at this point in their careers.
