On Friday, Darius Slay of the Philadelphia Eagles commented on a video on Twitter of a police officer getting an object thrown at him. Just a day after joking about the situation, Slay is apologizing for the comments he made on the video involving the police officer.

In the video that Slay commented on, a police officer was hit with a trash can lid that was thrown by another person. The All-Pro cornerback would tweet “Captain America!” with a laughing emoji, as to say the situation was humorous.

The Eagles talent has since deleted his tweet and is remorseful for his actions. He apologized on Twitter on Saturday morning after receiving a ton of backlash from fans and other people that may follow him on social media.

“Yesterday I made a comment on a post that, at the time, seemed harmless to me,” Darius Slay wrote. “If you know me, you know I’m a funny, outgoing type of guy. I made a comment that seemed humorous at the time but I meant no harm. I do not condone law enforcement violence whatsoever, especially with everything going on now. To anyone I offended, I do apologize.”

The dynamic between police officers and black people have become a popular topic this offseason. Besides the unfortunate death of George Floyd in police custody, Jacob Blake was recently shot by police seven times. As a result, Blake is now paralyzed from his waist down.

Players and coaches around the NFL have spoken out on what they can do to create change moving forward. While Slay viewed it as harmless at first, he understands that his comments could be counterproductive to what is going on. Hopefully Slay can learn from this situation so he can be a leader for the Eagles on and off the field.
