Tom Cruise is known for being ambitious in filmmaking, and his words to Mission: Impossible co-star Shea Whigham prove again that he doesn't mess around.
Whigham plays Jasper Briggs in Dead Reckoning. He discussed working with Cruise with THR and a dinner where the Top Gun actor made it clear there was much to do when making the film. And we have a lot to look forward to.
Shea Whigham discusses a convo with Tom Cruise for Mission: Impossible
“We did this scene between Tom and myself, and then Tom said, ‘We're going to go out to dinner.' So we went out to dinner when I was done, and then Tom said, ‘Do you realize that we come out one year from today? And it's going to be a sprint to finish the f—–g thing,'” Whigham reflects. “What he's doing now, people are going to be floored. He wants to make this one like an adventure film, and he and McQuarrie have an idea of what they want to do with it. So it's going to be amazing.”
McQuarrie is the director of Dead Reckoning and other Mission: Impossible films.
Before this admission, he admitted, “I said to Christopher McQuarrie on [Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning]: ‘I don't want a bigger trailer. I don't want more money. I don't want better catering. I just want one scene between Tom and I, where you, McQ write it like The Usual Suspects, and we get a chance to get in there.' And he delivered.”
Article Continues BelowWhigham reflected last year on making Part One and how he had to chase Cruise around to Discussing Film, which led to an unfortunate injury.
“That's true. That's not Hollywood,” he said. “We were in Venice, we had been chasing him all night. It was probably the fifth day in a row of chasing him and doing all-nighters. I didn't know I was going to be in the Venice portion, to be honest with you. So I wasn't training other than lifting a glass of red every night — vino, great Italian vino. Though they jumped in and said, based on what you've been doing, we're going to have you chase Tom all over Venice!”
“So I started doing that without really working out and I pulled [a muscle in my leg] during the last shot,” he continued. “It was morning, so it was almost blue hour. And then we didn't get the shot, there was something wrong with it. McQ asked if I had another one in me, but I knew I had pulled it. McQ said, ‘Can you give me one more?' I knew I was hurt, but I did it anyway. And, I mean, we got it. But I was limping hard, and I was out for a couple of weeks after that. That's true.”
We'll have to wait a while to catch Shea Whigham in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part Two to be released. Initially, it was set for 2024. However, it's been pushed to May 23, 2025. This is so Cruise and others who worked on Part 1 time to promote it when it was released and shut down production. Plus, the strikes halted things further as everything was shut down longer.
