Prime Video will be making Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s Tomb Raider series. However, there's a catch.

On May 14, Prime Video made several announcements about their upcoming slate. Included in those announcements was Waller-Bridge's series.

“The legacy continues. Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics to expand the Tomb Raider universe,” the announcement began. “Phoebe Waller-Bridge set as Writer and Executive Producer for the new series coming to Prime Video.”

So while Waller-Bridge will write and executive produce the series, she will not star in the series. One of the next exciting steps is finding out who they cast to lead the Prime Video series.

This shouldn't come as a surprise. Waller-Bridge hasn't been shy about her love for the Tomb Raider franchise and the announcement is more of a formality. In a statement (via Variety), Waller-Bridge seemed over the moon.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she'd explode,” she said. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators.

“Lara Craft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” she concluded.

This isn't Phoebe Waller-Bridge's first rodeo with Prime Video. She gained notoriety for creating, writing, and starring in Fleabag. The series ran for two seasons and 12 episodes from 2016-19. Sian Clifford and Andrew Scott also starred in the series. Olivia Colman had a supporting role in the series.

She then gained wider recognition for writing and producing Killing Eve. Her film credits include Albert Nobbs, The Iron Lady, and Goodbye Christopher Robin.

More recently, Waller-Bridge has been working on blockbuster films. This began when she voiced L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story. She then helped write Daniel Craig's final James Bond adventure, No Time to Die, and starred in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with Harrison Ford.

Coming up, Waller-Bridge will star in John Krasinski's IF. The film follows a young girl who attempts to reunite adults with their childhood imaginary friends. She will voice Blossom in the film. She will also star in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell as well.

What is Tomb Raider?

Tomb Raider began as an adventure video game in 1994. Several games have been released to date.

However, the franchise made its way to the big screen in 2001 with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The film starred Angelina Jolie in the title role. She would return for a sequel in 2003. The films grossed $274 million and $160 million, respectively.

Over a decade later in 2018, the franchise returned with a new star. Roar Uthaug directed Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander playing Lara Croft. The film grossed $274 million at the box office, but a sequel looks unlikelier than ever with the Tomb Raider Prime Video series announcement.

Before the Prime Video series, a 10-part animated series titled Revisioned: Tomb Raider, was released in 2007.
