Free-agent veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin is set to sign a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Irvin was recently released by the Oakland Raiders after seeing his playing time significantly reduced. He cleared waivers on Tuesday, making him a free agent.
Irvin spent the past three years with the Raiders. He played and started in 40 out of a possible 40 games, recording 18 sacks and 12 total tackles with 11 forced fumbles.
Irvin found it very difficult being the Raiders' top pass rusher this year with Khalil Mack gone. Through eight games this season, he had three sacks with six tackles.
Raiders coach Jon Gruden limited Irvin's snaps over the last few games and explained that it was because the struggling Raiders haven't had the lead as often.
Irvin will now get the opportunity to play on a more competitive team in the Falcons, who have won three games in a row to climb back up to 4-4 and possible playoff contention in the NFC. He played two seasons for Falcons head coach Dan Quinn when he was the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, so he shouldn't have much trouble familiarizing himself with the Falcons' defensive scheme.
The 31-year-old Irvin should provide a strong veteran presence to a talented young Falcons edge rushing group that includes Takkarist McKinley and Vic Beasley. He should also help prop up an underperforming Falcons pass rush which has only produced 17 sacks thus far this season, which is tied for 27th in the league.
