Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that safety J.J. Wilcox will miss the entire 2019 campaign after tearing his ACL in practice on Monday, according to ESPN.

This is just the latest in a string of injuries that have occurred to Falcons defensive players over the last year, with their secondary being particularly hit hard. In 2018, safeties Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen suffered season-ending injuries, with Neal tearing his ACL and Allen tearing his Achilles.

The Falcons added Wilcox as a depth signing in April.

Wilcox, who played his collegiate football at Georgia Southern, was originally selected by the Cowboys in the third round (80th pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He played in 13 games during his rookie campaign, totaling 38 tackles. He then went on to become a full-time starter in his second season, appearing in all 16 contests and registering 81 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and five passes defended.

The 28-year-old spent one more season as a starter for Dallas in 2015, finishing with 48 tackles, a pick and a fumble recovery before being demoted to a reserve role the following year.

Wilcox then signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, playing in 12 games as a reserve and logging 12 tackles and an interception. He then went on to split the 2018 campaign between the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets, participating in just seven contests and tallying seven tackles.

The Falcons, meanwhile, are coming off of a season in which they won just seven games and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
