The Atlanta Falcons have made a contract extension for quarterback Matt Ryan the main objective this offseason. Ryan will be in the final year of his contract in 2018, and it will likely cost a lot of money to get him to agree to a new deal considering how high the demand for quality quarterbacks is these days.

However, Falcons owner Arthur Blank is unconcerned with the current quarterback market and is instead focused on securing his franchise QB to a team-friendly deal.

“I don’t care about the other quarterbacks’ movement,” Blank said per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter . “What I care about is taking care of our quarterback in a way that’s respectful to him and in a way that is respectful to the franchise.”

It’s understandable for Blank to feel the way he does. No owner wants to pay an exorbitant sum for one player, especially with other players on the team set to command raises of their own in the near future.

However, it will likely be difficult for Blank to convince Ryan to come to terms with a deal that doesn’t make him among the highest paid quarterbacks in the league. After all, Ryan is just 32 years old, not to mention a former MVP who very nearly led the franchise to their first Super Bowl title.

After seeing what other teams are doing just to land a competent quarterback like Alex Smith or Kirk Cousins, Ryan will want to be paid what he feels he’s worth, which is a lot more than them.

If Blank does refuse to pay over the odds for Ryan’s next deal, then it could be hard to see the Falcons achieving their top priority in the offseason.
