Serena Williams was just ousted from the 2021 French Open in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) by 21-year-old Elena Rybakina in Round 4 on Sunday.

The 39-year-old was just never able to get it going against her much younger opponent. While Williams has won the French Open three times in her illustrious career, she hasn't made it past the fourth round since 2016. She entered the tournament this year as the No. 7 seed, with Rybakina at No. 21.

This Serena Williams loss comes shortly after Roger Federer pulled out of the French Open due to his knee injury, meaning two giants of the sport exited Roland Garros just hours apart.

With this loss, Williams remains stuck on 23 major victories. Her last victory in a major came in 2017 at the Australian Open. She's currently ranked No. 8 in the world.

With Elena Rybakina moving past Serena Williams in Round 4, she'll now be facing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals. Rybakina has never been this far in a major tournament.

While Serena is out, there's still a strong American presence remaining at the French Open. No. 4 seed Sofia Kenin is the top seed left in the tournament, and she'll be playing Maria Sakkari in Round 4 on Monday. Coco Gauff  and Sloane Stephens are also still alive.
