The show's logline reads: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros …  a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Set in an age when the Targarten line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbably and incomparable friends.”

Aerion Targaryen appears in the the first Dunk and Egg novella, The Hedge Knight. There he was referred to as Aerion the Monstrous by others while he called himself Aerion Brightflame. He was the second son of King Maekar I Targaryen and was thought to be one of the foremost examples of what the Westerosi called the Targaryen Madness. It was rumored that he dabbled in the black arts and thought that he was a dragon in a human body.

The year his son Maegor was born, he died screaming after he drank a cup of wildfire which he believed would turn him into an actual dragon. After his father died, the Great Council passed over Maegor due to fears that he may have inherited his father's madness.

Baelor Targaryen, also known as Baelor Breakspear, was the eldest son and heir of King Daeron II Targaryen. He served as his father's Hand until his death. He was killed by his nephew Maekar I. The chronicles said the king regretted dealing the death blow to his uncle and marked his death anniversary yearly.

New Targaryens to love and hate

Tanselle, also called Tanselle Too-Tall, was a Dornish puppeteer, who may serve as Ser Duncan's love interest in the series. She's described to be “only half a head shorter” than Ser Duncan. For comparison, he was supposed to be 6'11”.

Ser Lyonel Baratheon, or the Laughing Storm,  was called that due to his habit of laughing loudly at his enemies. He was a great favorite of the small folk and considered to be as one of the finest fighters. He fought Ser Duncan the Tall in a trial by battle, but yieled to him in the end.

Maekar Targaryen is the 14th Targaryen king on the Iron Throne and served as an army commander two Blackfyre Rebellions. He ascended the throne after Targaryen heirs unexpectedly died. He was often compared to his brother Baelor and was found wanting due to his lack of charm and difficulty in making friends and allies.

His fourth son, Aegon V, succeeded him after a Great Council was convened. In Game of Thrones, he was Master Aemon's father. In the book A Feast of Crows, he tell Samwell Tarly about his father and his objection to Aemon's studying at the Citadel and his hope that the reluctant king died in peace.
