Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms gets minor and major updates, according the The Hollywood Reporter exclusive.

To start with the major news, the prequel series has found a director in Owen Harris, who helmed Black Mirror's San Junipero. Harris will be directing the first half of the season. He will also serve as an executive producer, while directing the first three episodes.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms moves forward

A Knight of Seven Kingdoms cover over a calendar and surrounded by question marks

As for the minor update, the title has now been shortened to exclude the words “The Hedge Knight.” The title isn't final yet, but it's where it currently stands.

Other details include the show's episode count of six, which makes it shorter than the first seasons of both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Both series had 10 episodes for their season one. While it does make for a tight schedule, the run time seems enough since the show is based on George R.R. Martin's novella The Hedge Knight, which only has 160 pages, compared to his 900-page GoT books.

The most recent casting announcement for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are for its lead roles. Peter Claffey of Vikings: Valhalla will play Ser Duncan the Tall. Dexter Sol Ansell will play the squire Egg.

The series follows the story “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg.”

The logline continued, “Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Owen Harris directs Ser Duncan and Egg

Harris' directorial credits include helming the first episode of Jordan Peele's The Twilight Zone remake. He also directed Troy: Fall of a City, as well as four episodes of Secret Diary of a Call Girl and three episodes of Misfits. His first feature film was 2015's Kill Your Friends, starring Daniel Radcliffe. The movie debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. Harris' most recent Peacock miniseries Mrs. Davis.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will most likely be markedly different from Thrones or House of the Dragon. While the two existing shows are sprawling epics with ensemble casts and locations in different parts of the world, Knight focuses on only two characters and may have a lighter tone.

The series is one of several projects in Martin's universe of works that have been pitched for developed to hopefully expand the world begun by Game of Thrones. There are still in development.

There are three animated versions that are currently in the works at HBO/MAX. Another project that has been gaining traction is Aegon's Conquest, a prequel to the events before House of the Dragon. Conquest already has Mattson Tomlin attached to write.

However there is one that won't see the light of day, for now: Kit Harington's Jon Snow spinoff.

All these spinoffs are due to the success of Dragon, which averaged 29 million views for every episode, according to HBO. House of the Dragon's season two will premiere June 16.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has an expected release date sometime in 2025.
