Atari is letting go of their free-to-play and mobile games strategy in favor of developing premium console and PC games.

GI.biz reported earlier this week that the company's board of directors has approved the strategy.

Last April, Wade J. Rosen took over as CEO of Atari and announced that it would be reorganizing the company into two major divisions: Atari Gaming and Atari Blockchain.

Now, the company has decided to improve these plans to focus more on premium gaming. The company states that it plans to “build a strong pipeline of premium games on all platforms” with the first of these games arriving before the end of March 2022.

“Our intent with any gaming experience is to provide accessible and joyful moments of meaningful play,” says Rosen.

“That’s the core of Atari and what binds our history with our future.”

“We feel that premium gaming is a better representative of this type of gaming experience and the Atari DNA.”

The company also added that the successful free-to-play games are going to remain. On the other hand, games like Roller Coaster Tycoon Stories and Ninja Golf might be sold to other companies or completely shut down.

The company is also exiting its casino business in Africa and writing down its efforts to get into TV show production.

As a result of the new strategy, Atari is expecting to take a €5 million ($5.9 million) impairment loss.

It seems like Atari knows what they're doing for the time being. Let's just hope they don't make a remake for the monstrosity that was E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
