League of Legends Patch 12.10: The Durability Update
League of Legends Patch 12.10 is the much-awaited Champion Durability Update. Primarily aimed at making champions a LOT tankier, the patch will also cut down on all the sustain and shielding present in the game. Neutral objectives and mana regen will also receive some changes to maintain game balance. Don't wanna read our summary of the patch? The biggest winners of this patch has to be the AD Carry role. Having the most access to consistent true damage in the game (e.g. Vayne, Kraken Slayer) as well as being the best users of Armor Penetration items (Lord Dominik's Regards, Serylda's Grudge), this update buffs them more than it does the tankier champions.
According to the dev blog posted pertaining to the Durability Update, the main goal is to fix the outstanding problem of League, and that is too much damage. This means that the champions that are on the squishier side will have less opportunities to express their skill, since dying fast means a shorter window for counterplay.
The dev blog stressed that the objective was NOT to create a game where no kills happen. High-kill games means a more enjoyable time to a lot of players, and also makes for more exciting professional games. Killing somebody is also a better reward for skill expression than just making the enemy recall. Despite these positives, the devs made a point that the cons of lower survivability outweigh these.
“When you're dying so fast that it's difficult to tell what killed you, game clarity takes a hit which leads to frustrating experiences,”
the post read. “Combat can sometimes be overly rewarding when high threat champions only need to use a portion of their kit to secure a kill. Ideally, players should have to play around their champion’s key skill test to hit those satisfying combos (eg. Zed’s triple shuriken). Long term, we think poor skill tests make playing your favorite champions a lot less satisfying.”
When dying is so easy, fights end up being really short and confusing. This doesn't live up to the “epic clash of legends fantasy” that League of Legends wants to live up to.
They outlined what players should expect when the update does hit:
- Players will feel that their champions are dealing and taking less damage
- Burst champions must commit more resources or be further ahead to get quick kills
- Bigger windows of opportunity for counterplay
- Skirmishes and teamfights will last longer
The update, however, doesn't mean the one-shots will be completely removed from the game. High burst damage champions will have to commit and hit their full kit to 100-0 an enemy squishy if they're not extremely ahead. In the case that they are extremely ahead, they are able to kill the enemy with only a part of their kit as a reward for passing their skill test multiple times. “For any given amount of lead, burst champs will have to press one or two more buttons than before in order to secure 100-0 kills. Our intent with this update isn’t to overnerf burst champions, so we’ll be keeping an eye on them to make sure they land in a healthy spot.”
They recognize that this is a big change, and that it shouldn't make games on all skill levels a snoozefest. “Our goal is to hit a sweet spot where all classes are viable, tactical combat has good pacing allowing for moments of skill expression, and the balance of snowballing and scaling are in healthy states.”
Riot Phlox took to Twitter to share a closer view on this patch, saying “wide sweeping changes like this just aren't predictable enough for us to know which specific champ will be OP and by how much before release. It's gonna be a fun time figuring out new builds and counters and all that though. ”
Champions
All Champions will receive the following stat bonuses:
- + 70 Base Health
- +14 Health per Level
- +1.2 Armor per Level
- +0.8 MR per Level
At Level 18, all of these changes add up to the following:
- +308 Base Health
- +20.4 Armor
- +13.6 MR
Champions that have healing in their kit will have the healing effects reduced by 10-28%.
“Why are we nerfing all your healing? Well, the worth of every point of healing/shielding is just strictly up with all the resists you're getting. This is doubly true with Grievous Wounds getting nerfed,” said Riot Phlox in a Tweet.
Most champions that have shielding in their kit will have it reduced by about 10%.
“If we didn't adjust healing and shielding, sustain champs would be absolutely unkillable and buffed waaay more than their counterparts. We're not trying to swap league into a Mega-Mundo-Meta,” Riot Phlox added.
