Producer Yoshimi Yasuda tweeted that he bought back the rights for the game from the game's original Japanese publisher, Kadokawa Games. He also shared that some of the original development staff are back working on the remake. According to him, the game's original Western publisher Warner Bros. is also supportive of the project. Yasuda, however, did not mention Suda 51, the original game's co-director, as well as the original development studio Grasshopper Manufacture, if either parties are still involved with the Lollipop Chainsaw Remake project.

Lollipop Chainsaw turned off a lot of players when it first came out due to its portrayal of women – the main character is a scantily-clad cheerleader named Juliet Starling. A lot of the game's scenes are also indulgent and fan-servicey, which ruffled a lot of feathers when it first came out. However, the game still captured a cult following thanks to its hack-and-slash gameplay as well as its whimsical and tongue-in-cheek humor. The game was, after all, co-written by James Gunn, so it's no wonder that the game has some comedic chops on it.
